Book Review: DESIRES OF THE DEAD

TITLE: DESIRES OF THE DEAD
AUTHOR: Kimberly Derting
IMPRINT: HarperCollins
PUBLICATION DATE: 15 February 2011
PREVIOUS TITLES IN SERIES: THE BODY FINDER

The missing dead call to Violet. They want to be found.

Violet can sense the echoes of those who've been murdered—and the matching imprint that clings to their killers. Only those closest to her know what she is capable of, but when she discovers the body of a young boy she also draws the attention of the FBI, threatening her entire way of life.

As Violet works to keep her morbid ability a secret, she unwittingly becomes the object of a dangerous obsession. Normally she'd turn to her best friend, Jay, except now that they are officially a couple, the rules of their relationship seem to have changed. And with Jay spending more and more time with his new friend Mike, Violet is left with too much time on her hands as she wonders where things went wrong. But when she fills the void by digging into Mike's tragic family history, she stumbles upon a dark truth that could put everyone in danger.

THE TWEET
In this sequel to THE BODY FINDER, Violet is dealing with a new romance, a dead body & mystery to solve, all with the FBI watching closely.

WHAT WORKED
What I liked most about DESIRES OF THE DEAD (beyond the tension filled, suspensful plotline) was the progression of Violet and Jay's relationship. It seemed natural and realistic, not rushed at all. Violet and Jay started out as friends in the previous book, THE BODY FINDER, but in DESIRES OF THE DEAD, their relationship has progressed to something more and Violet especially, is trying to deal with this change in status. I loved how the two characters actually talked about their feelings and the consequences of taking their relationship to the next step. I think this not only made Violet and Jay seem like real people, but it sends a good message to young adult readers who may. and most likely are, facing a similar situation.

The other thing I loved about DESIRES OF THE DEAD was the switch in point of view from Violet to the perpetrator of the crime. This made the story more darker and twisted because readers were allowed to experience the thoughts and feelings of the criminal. It also gave the story more depth and kept me reading in order to find out what would happen next and when the identity of the killer would be revealed.

OVERALL
DESIRES OF THE DEAD is a tension filled read from beginning to end. Fans of mystery and suspense will definitely enjoy this book.
